This is a flash fiction piece I wrote as part of a speed writing exercise. The prompt was “The local Spirit Halloween is closed during business hours. What could be going on for it to be closed?”

This was my big real publication and one of my favorite short stories that I’ve written. I wrote it at the request of my wife, when she asked me how the birds will live when all the humans are gone.

In 2019 my short story “Space Man’s Anchor” was among the winners of a contest for the “Hive, Queen, and Country” role-playing game. Strap in for Victorian space adventure, stiff upper lips, sabotage, and infinitesimal Calculus!
